About the Material

The plastic material ABS is excellent for early-stage rough prototypes and mechanical strength. For initial prototyping applications, ABS is a cost-effective material and, with post-processing options, can provide a superior surface polish than PLA.

Material Finish

Low-resolution (0.1 mm) stacking gives ABS a matte look with distinct extrusion lines. ABS is available in three colors: Black, White, and Neutral, each of which has a slightly different finish.

Black ABS has a similar finish as black PLA but is a little more lustrous than its Neutral and White equivalents.

While White ABS is the least dazzling appearance of the three, Neutral ABS has a more milky finish.

  • Internal Cavities: All internal cavities will have support material inside.
  • Threads and Inserts: For ABS, we recommend you use heat stake inserts. For more information, check out our article on The Best Fasteners for 3D Printed Parts.
  • Text Guidelines: Engraved text (indented) is recommended over embossed, since ABS is not able to capture fine details very well.
